Plateau govt to distribute 600,000 sanitary pads to schools

The Plateau State government says it will distribute 600,000 sanitary pads to schools in the 17 local governments of the state.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Caroline Dafur, who disclosed this on Friday in Jos, said the distribution was to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child.
Mr Dafur said the state government, through the ministry, would establish a sanitary pad bank in 20 schools in the state.
“ The state government is responsive and sensitive to the needs of the girl child and all children in the state,” she said.
The commissioner said that sometimes young girls get scared and frustrated and stay away from school during their menstrual period.
“No girl should avoid school during their monthly flow, and that is why we want the sanitary pad bank in schools,” she said.
Also speaking, Olivia Dazyem, the chairperson of the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission, said that girls must be protected at all times.
Ms Dazyem said the issue of the girl child in the state had received a lot of attention and commended the state government.
