Oyo alerts flood-prone communities to imminent rainfall, flooding

Oyo State residents in flood-prone communities within the Ibadan metropolis have been alerted to imminent heavy rainfall and its accompanying floods.

The latest alert was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the Administrative Secretary of the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency, Busari Ojuolape.

Mrs Ojuolape stated that areas situated in the east and northeast axis of Ibadan would experience severe rain, with communities within the core of Ibadan metropolis recording a rather moderate pour of rain.

She noted, “According to the information made available by the state Flood Early Warning System, some parts of the north of Ibadan city, possibly parts of Egbeda LGA (eastern edges) and areas bordering Lagelu LGA, will experience heavy rainfall today. Communities along the Ibadan-Ife Road (A5 highway) eastward: Areas such as Egbeda and further east on this major road, will also experience heavy rainfall.”

The statement added that minimal downpour would be experienced in areas such as IITA, the Ibadan Airport, University of Ibadan, Ojoo, Akobo, Basorun, Gate, Challenge, Ring Road, and many other densely populated areas within the city.

It further stated that parts of Akinyele Local Government, especially the eastern and central parts, parts of Oluyole Local Government, especially Northeastern sections would also witness rainfall.

Assuring of the state’s government readiness to ameliorate emergencies, Mr Ojuolape urged residents to treat the warning with utmost discretion.
