The Ekiti State Environmental Protection Agency (EKSEPA) says the ongoing dredging of waterways at Alapo Igo Lane 5 in Ido-Ekiti aims to curb flooding in the area.

The agency’s chairman, Bamitale Oguntoyinbo, gave the assurance during a scheduled visit to the dredging site on Sunday.

He said the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, was deeply committed to the well-being of residents and approved the dredging of major waterways in the community to mitigate the risk of flooding.

Mr Oguntoyinbo explained that the project contractor had been directed to dredge three kilometres and deliver high-quality work on the designated site.

“The affected areas are currently being dredged to allow for the free flow of large volumes of water during the rainy season,” he said.

“I am delighted to see the progress on the dredging of the waterways at Alapo Igo Lane 5 in Ido-Ekiti. The site engineer is working with clear directives to ensure that the full 3km stretch is dredged—no less.

“This dredging is being carried out through direct labour, supervised by competent engineers engaged by the agency, and not as a contractual project,” Mr Oguntoyinbo said.

He also commended Mr Oyebanji for his proactive approach and timely approval of the waterway dredging.

“The ongoing work in Ido-Ekiti is a testament to the governor’s dedication to protecting lives and property, especially in rural communities,” he added.

Mr Oguntoyinbo, however, appealed to residents to refrain from dumping refuse in the waterways and to adopt proper hygiene practices to support the government’s efforts.
