Osimhen hits double-figure goal tally as Napoli defeat Sampdoria to return to winning ways

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen extended his goal tally to double-figure as Italian Serie A table leader Napoli recorded a 2-0 away win over bottom side Sampdoria on Sunday.
The 24-year-old was singled out for criticism by former Italy international, Fabrizio Ravanelli, following Napoli’s 1-0 league defeat to Inter Milan, saying the former Lille player failed and did less in the game.
Napoli failed to go upfront in the opening minutes after Matteo Politano penalty was saved by goalkeeper Emil Audero before Osimhen finally scored for Napoli in the 19th minute – the lanky striker stretched leg and met Mario Rui’s pass, which went over Audero, this time, he was unable to do anything.
Just before the halftime whistle, Sampdoria woes were compounded after Tomas Rincon denied Osimhen a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Despite being one-man down for the rest of the match, Sampdoria continued to pose several threats on the opposition’s half in search for an equaliser but their hopes would soon be shattered.
In the 80th minute of the close game, a penalty was awarded to Napoli after intervention by VAR following a handball by Ronaldo Vieira in the penalty area, Eljif Elmas scored the penalty to seal the victory for Gli Azzurri.
Napoli remains atop of the Serie A table with 44 points, seven points ahead of second-placed Juventus.
Sampdoria occupy the 18th position and might go down further after the current round of matches. They have now lost their six consecutive home games this season and failed to score in all of their last five matches in the league.
Meanwhile, Osimhen leads the Serie A top-scoring chart with 10 goals, and he is the only player to achieve a double-figure goal tally in the league this season.
