Onitsha firefighters attacked for arriving late to put out fire

Mob has attacked operatives of Anambra State Fire Service for arriving late at the scene of a fire incident.
This is contained in a statement signed by the fire chief of Anambra Fire Service, Martin Agbili, in Onitsha on Monday.
Mr Agbili said the attack occurred at Atani Road, by Uga Junction, Onitsha, around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.
He said the attackers shattered the fire truck’s windscreen, side mirrors and injured firefighters.
The fire chief described the attack as barbaric and a bad way to start 2023.
“They threw stones, sticks and irons at us. Unfortunately, they shattered the windscreen of our fire trucks and the side glasses and also wounded some firefighters,” stated Mr Agbili. “As they started throwing stones at the fire truck while the fire was still on, what we could hear was, ‘is it now that you people are coming to fight the fire?”
He added, “We managed to escape the mob attack with our shattered windscreen and some injured firefighters.”
He assured that the perpetrators would be brought to book.
