Olivia Hussey, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ star, dies at 73

Hussey captivated audiences with her portrayal of Shakespeare’s tragic heroine, earning her a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year at 17.

Olivia Hussey, the actress who gained international fame for her role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet, died on Friday at 73. 

Her publicist, Natalie Beita, confirmed that the cause was breast cancer, and she died at her home in Los Angeles. 

Hussey captivated audiences with her portrayal of Shakespeare’s tragic heroine, earning her a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year at 17. 

Her performance opposite Leonard Whiting, who played Romeo, became iconic, cementing the film as one of the most celebrated adaptations of the classic play.  

Hussey’s career spanned decades, with roles in films like “Black Christmas” (1974) and “Jesus of Nazareth” (1977), where she played the Virgin Mary. 

Despite facing challenges in her personal life, including health battles, she remained a beloved figure in cinema and a source of inspiration for many.

Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hussey moved to London as a child. 

Her interest in acting blossomed early, leading her to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. At 15, she was cast as Juliet, a role that defined her career and elevated her to stardom.  

After her breakout role, she appeared in notable projects such as “The Man with Bogart’s Face” (1980) and voiced characters in animated works like “Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace.”

She survived breast cancer in the 2000s and became an advocate for early detection. 

She married three times and had three children, often describing her family as her greatest joy.  

Her legacy as a performer, particularly as Juliet, remains exceptional.
