The Ogun House of Assembly has advised local government chairpersons to adhere to the laws and edicts guiding their operations.

Jemili Akingbade, who led the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on an oversight visit to the Abeokuta South Local Government Council, gave the advice on Wednesday.

Mr Akingbade said the relevant laws and edicts aim to ensure compliance and effective governance at the local level. He said the committee’s oversight visit assessed the council’s performance and ensured they complied with due process in implementing the grassroots project.

Mr Akingbade, who reiterated the importance of transparency and compliance with proper procedures in project execution, urged council chairpersons to operate in line with relevant laws and edicts governing their function.

He directed the council to provide a comprehensive documentation of all ongoing and completed projects, which should contain cost implications, memos for approvals, bills of quantity, vouchers, and records of projects approved at Finance and General Purpose Committee meetings.

According to him, the oversight visit was part of the committee’s effort to evaluate the council’s performance in implementing the 2024 budget and to ensure alignment with the state government’s developmental agenda.

The council chairman, Afeez Balogun, commended the committee for the visit.

He described the visit as a welcome step toward promoting accountability and ensuring development at the grassroots level.
