Nuhu Ribadu must collaborate with governors to end kidnapping, banditry, terrorism in Nigeria: Afenifere

The pan-Yoruba socio- political organisation, Afenifere, has called on the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to urgently map out strategies in fighting the rising security challenges in the country.
The group also expressed concerns over the heightened security crisis in the South-West region, referencing the spate of kidnapping and extra-judicial killings in some states.
According to the group, Mr Ribadu needs to collaborate with the state governors in the region to stem the tide of the security challenges, mostly terrorism and put them under control.
The position was made known through a communique issued and signed by its national publicity secretary, Jare Ajayi, after a caucus meeting held at the residence of its foremost leader, Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure on Monday.
“Given the prime of position that security occupies in the life of any society, Afenifere again called on the Federal Government and Security Agencies to redesign the security architecture in such a way that those in charge of security would be able to dig deeper into its causes and deal with them decisively.
“In this wise, we are calling on the National Security Adviser (NSA) , Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to, in collaboration with State Governors, urgently come up with strategies to confront the challenges and put them under control,” the communique read in part.
The group also asked South-West governors to further strengthen the security network in the region amid the upsurge of terrorism, adding that personnel of Amotekun Corp should be increased, motivated, trained, and properly equipped.
It advocated that modern technology such as drones among others to tackle insecurity should be deployed, while reiterating its stand for state police to take off.
The group cited instances were the resurgence of kidnapping, terrorism and banditry are now common among which is Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Oyo with other states to include Kogi, Plateau, Benue, Anambra, Edo, Nassarawa, Niger, and Kaduna, while calling on state governors to track unscrupulous herders terrorising farmers – including owners of the cows with which they are making lives difficult for people.
Reiterating the importance of food to the country’s economy, Afenifere urged the state governors in the region to pay attention to agriculture and the farming system.
It, however, advised that policy papers on how farm settlements were established and run be revisited and reviewed in line with the present reality for implementation purposes.
“This time around, local government councils should be given the mandate and leverage to establish farms in their respective areas.
“Farm inputs will be made available to the farmers at subsidised rates. In the same vein, food items can be made available to the people at subsidised rates.”
While saluting the federal government for granting autonomy to the local government administration, Afenifere also asked people at the grassroots to monitor how the allocations coming in are utilised.
“In view of the desire by the federal government for local governments to have fiscal autonomy as exemplified by the Supreme Court Ruling and the earnestness of the local governments to get their monthly allocations directly,
“The meeting called on State Governors to cooperate with the federal government so that the allocations to local governments can take effect immediately.”
