Nigeria’s security forces shameful, says Amnesty International amid bandits’ attacks on villagers

“The ongoing failure of security forces to take sufficient steps to protect villagers from these predictable attacks is utterly shameful,” said Amnesty International.

Amnesty International, on Tuesday, expressed dissatisfaction over the killing of five persons and the abduction of an unconfirmed number of people in Madira, a town in the Kaura Namoda LGA in Zamfara.

The rights organisation stated that about 100 bandits rode on motorcycles into the village in the early hours of Tuesday, setting many houses ablaze.

Similar violent raids occurred in Dayau and Unguwar Sarkin Musulmi villages on Wednesday and Thursday, said Amnesty International.

“The bandits viciously razed many homes. On 7 May, the bandits raided Dayau village — also in Kaura Namoda LGA, razed homes and barns.

“On 8 May, the bandits raided Unguwar Sarkin Musulmi village and abducted two people. Bandits have been operating across Zamfara state with impunity, displaying utter disregard for the sanctity of life,” it said.

Amnesty International decried security forces’ inability to end the incessant raids of rural communities in the North by bandits.

“Terrifying attacks on rural communities in the north of Nigeria have been going on for years,” said the rights group. “The ongoing failure of security forces to take sufficient steps to protect villagers from these predictable attacks is utterly shameful.”
