Nkechi Ufochukwu, Nigeria’s ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, has presented her letters of credence to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Nigerian Embassy in Israel, the ceremony took place on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, in line with diplomatic tradition.

The event also marked the official start of Ms Ufochukwu’s tour of duty as Nigeria’s principal envoy to Cyprus.

She conveyed the fraternal greetings of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to Mr Christodoulides and pledged to boost relations between both countries during her tour of duty.

Mr Christodoulides welcomed Ms Ufochukwu and reaffirmed the deep and enduring friendship between Cyprus and Nigeria.

He said the two countries share ties of friendship born of historical experiences, common principles and enduring links between their peoples.

He said Cyprus fully understands Nigeria’s significant role in West Africa and across the continent, as well as its contribution to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

He assured her that the Cypriot government stood ready to work closely with Nigeria to advance diplomatic relations in areas of mutual interest.

These include the economy, trade and investment, education and political dialogue, while tackling common challenges bilaterally and multilaterally.

The presentation of the letters of credence is a significant milestone in bilateral relations and a formal accreditation to perform representational duties.

It also serves as the official channel of communication between Abuja and Nicosia.
