Nigeria’s diversity not curse but strength, says cleric

The General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Jerry Pillay, has urged Nigerians to reject divisive narratives and foster peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Pillay stated this during a consultative meeting with church leaders and ecumenical stakeholders in Abuja on Wednesday.
Emphasising the need for interfaith harmony, the cleric noted that religious and ethnic diversity should serve as a source of strength rather than a tool for division.
”A Muslim is not the enemy of a Christian, and a Christian is not the enemy of a Muslim. The North is not the enemy of the South, nor is one ethnic group the enemy of another.
”Nigeria’s diversity is not a curse but can be a towering strength if citizens choose unity over division,” Mr Pillay said.
He reminded political leaders and citizens that national continuity transcends electoral contests, warning that campaigns must not leave behind a legacy of bitterness.
“Nigeria will remain Nigeria after the election. Neighbours will remain neighbours. Muslims and Christians will continue to live together, sharing the same markets, schools and workplaces.
”Therefore, every political leader should ask: What kind of Nigeria will my campaign leave behind? Will it be bitterness or hope? Fear or confidence? Division or unity? Violence or peace?” he said.
According to him, the church has a prophetic responsibility to promote peace and justice.
He added that places of worship must never be used for partisan mobilisation or to demonise political opponents.
“The church must be a school of peace. Our preaching must not plant hatred, and our churches must not become instruments for demonising those who vote differently.
“I’m urging faith leaders to teach citizens how to disagree without becoming enemies,” he said.
Addressing broader governance issues, the cleric stated that democracy must deliver justice, protect vulnerable groups and address pressing socio-economic challenges such as poverty, youth unemployment and inflation.
He also advocated active inclusion and protection of women and young people in political and socio-economic processes.
“Nigeria is one of the world’s great nations of young people. They are citizens and leaders; they are the present, not merely the future of Nigeria. They must be protected from political violence and given genuine opportunities,” he said.
Reaffirming the support of the global ecumenical body, Mr Pillay assured Nigerian faith leaders that the WCC, representing more than 600 million Christians worldwide, stands in solidarity with the country on its journey toward justice, peace and national reconciliation.
Highlights of the event included special prayers led by the general secretary for peace, security and justice including peaceful electoral process in 2027.
