Nigerian Senate celebrates jailed Ekweremadu at 61

Nigerian Senate on Tuesday congratulated jailed former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu on his 61st birthday.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan announced Mr Ekweremadu’s birthday at the plenary on Tuesday, days after he was jailed for organ trafficking in the UK.
Mr Ekweremadu is serving a nine year jail term in a UK prison, while his wife Beatrice Ekweremadu is serving four year jail term. Obinna Obeta, a medical doctor involved in the case, also bagged a 10 years’ sentence for the same offence.
They were sentenced at London’s Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey under the Modern Slavery Act on On May 5.
The trio were in March convicted for traffic a young Nigerian, David Ukpo, to the United Kingdom, for the purpose of harvesting his kidney for Sonia Ekweremadu, the daughter of the top Nigerian senator.
