The Nigerian government has condoled with the people of Spain over a train collision that killed 68 people on Wednesday.

In a statement on Thursday, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, extended the country’s sympathies to Spain.

“Nigeria extends its heartfelt sympathies to the Government and people of the Kingdom of Spain, particularly families who have lost their loved ones, and those injured in the tragedy,” he said.

He stated that the country commended the prompt response of first responders and lauded efforts to provide much-needed emergency relief and care to all those affected by the disaster.

According to him, Nigeria also commended the Spanish government’s determination to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sad incident, with a view to further strengthening rail transport safety.

It added that Nigeria stood in solidarity with Spain at this difficult time, praying for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, strength for the bereaved families, and a speedy recovery for those injured in the crash.
