The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, has reiterated its commitment to strengthen cross-border trade between the country and Benin Republic.

The area comptroller, Mohammed Shuaibu, said this in a statement signed by the command’s public relations officer, Chado Zakari, made available to journalists on Friday in Ota.

Mr Shuaibu led a high-level delegation from the Ogun 1 Area Command of NCS, on a courtesy visit to the regional director of Plateau Customs in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic, Col. Gado Ibrahim.

He said the courtesy visit was a follow-up to the earlier one by Mr Gado to the NCS Idiroko and stakeholders meeting held at the command.

He said the visit by Ogun 1 Area Command was to discuss and fortify the cross-border trade relations between the two countries.

“The visit comes after a fruitful meeting with clearing agents, traders and stakeholders on March 4, 2025, at the Ogun 1 Command, when all parties committed to strengthening their collaboration and promoting the expansion of bilateral commerce.

“In addition, both sides reiterated their dedication to lowering administrative barriers, expediting trade procedures, and improving the effectiveness of customs clearance operations.

“With an emphasis on encouraging the free movement of commodities in accordance with the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, the visit underscored the need of fortifying economic connections between the two countries.

“I’m here today to further strengthen the cooperation and collaboration in line with the policy thrust of Comptroller-General of NCS, Bashir Adeniyi,” Mr Shuaibu said.

He stated that the command would continue to build a closer and more fruitful relationship with its neighbours.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to strengthening cross-border commerce, encouraging economic growth, and raising the quality of life for inhabitants.

Responding, Mr Ibrahim, noted that the Benin Republic’s authorities had held multiple meetings concerning the Igolo border.

He said at one of those meetings, criteria for resuming full-scale trans-border trade via the Igolo border was established.

Mr Ibrahim said the Igolo border had satisfied the requirements and promised to expedite action to ensure the commencement of cross-border trade.

“We are excited to keep working together and investigate fresh chances for development and partnership,” he said.
