The Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission and the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Nigeria are partnering to promote cultural exchange amongst their citizens.

The partnership agreement was reached when Mrs Miriam Palmero, the ambassador of Cuba to Nigeria, paid a courtesy visit to NiDCOM boss Abike Dabiri-Erewa on Monday in Abuja.

Ms Dabiri-Erewa said that to promote African culture, there was a need for African descent to unite globally for the common goal of promoting the diversity, strength, and progress of the continent.

She further said that the commission was eager to work with the Cuban people and government for effective and efficient diaspora engagement to galvanise cultural exchanges.

Responding, the Cuban ambassador acknowledged the crucial role and importance of exchanges in building cultural identities, given similar historical imperatives.

Therefore, Ms Palmero invited the NiDCOM boss to celebrate ‘The Decade for the People of African Descent’, scheduled for December in Havana and Matanzas provinces in Cuba.

She said that the event was similar to the Badagry ‘Door of Return Festival’ in Lagos, which captures the spiritual and socio-economic significance of the Historic African Diaspora.

The envoy commended Ms Dabiri-Erewa for the impressive work done to engage with the diaspora.

“We are looking forward to establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with the NiDCOM,” she said.
