New York police commissioner resigns amid probe of top city officials

Mr Caban’s resignation came eight days after federal agents seized his phone as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

The New York City police commissioner, Edward A. Caban, has bowed to pressure to resign.

The 57-year-old announced his resignation in an email sent to the Police Department on Thursday.

Sources claimed that the administration of Mayor Eric Adams had asked him to step aside since Monday, according to the New York Times.

The police commissioner in the email said his resignation became imperative because the “news around recent developments” has hindered him from fully focusing on “the department and people I love and have dedicated over 30 years of service to.”

“The N.Y.P.D. deserves someone who can solely focus on protecting and serving New York City, which is why — for the good of this city and this department — I have made the difficult decision to resign,” he explained.

Mr Caban’s resignation came eight days after federal agents seized his phone as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Four federal investigations have rocked the City Hall, leading to searches and phone seizures of high-ranking city officials, including Commissioner Caban.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York is in charge of the case involving Mr Caban, including two other inquiries regarding officials in Mr Adams’ administration.

A nightclub security business owned by the commissioner’s twin brother, James Caban, a former police officer sacked in 2001, is also under investigation by office prosecutors and officials of the Internal Revenue Service.
