Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has been indicted in federal corruption investigations into his administration.

As of Wednesday, the charges to be brought against Mr Adams when he surrendered to the authorities were unclear due to the indictment being under seal, the New York Times reported.

According to the outlet, federal investigators are trying to ascertain if the mayor and his campaign had a conspiracy with Turkey to get illegal foreign donations.

Details of his indictment, expected to be disclosed by federal prosecutors on Thursday, will make him the first sitting mayor in modern New York City history to be charged.

Mr Adams had admitted to visiting Turkey several times, including meeting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan while he was Brooklyn borough president.

However, Mr Adams, the second black mayor in the city’s history, in a video on Wednesday, described charges against him as lies, alleging that he is being targeted for standing up for his people.

Mr Adams said, “My fellow New Yorkers, it is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with federal crimes. If so, these charges will be entirely false, based on lies.

“But they would not be surprises. I always knew that if I stood my ground for all of you that I would be a target. And a target I became.”

FBI agents had, since November, approached Mr Adams and his security detail in the city street and took possession of his electronic devices

In a statement, Avi Small, a spokesperson for Kathy Hochul, the 57th and first female governor of the state, said the matter was being monitored, and “it would be premature to comment further until the matter is confirmed by law enforcement.”
