NEMA sensitises Zamfara communities to flood prevention strategies

The National Emergency Management Agency has urged flood-prone communities in Zamfara to adopt strategies to prevent flooding during the year.
The director-general of NENA, Zubaida Umar, urged stakeholders at a sensitisation and stakeholder engagement programme on disaster management in Gusau on Tuesday.
Ms Umar said the agency had identified mitigation strategies for communities at risk during the rainy season.
She said the sensitisation programme on disaster risk management was aimed at saving lives, restoring normalcy and building communal resilience across the country.
The NEMA chief stated that the 2025 seasonal climate prediction and annual flood outlook, as provided by the relevant authorities, had offered valuable insights into rainfall patterns and flood scenarios for the year.
She urged residents of flood-prone communities in the state to be vigilant and proactive towards adopting flood containment strategies in their environments.
The commissioner for humanitarian affairs, Musa Kainuwa, cautioned residents against dumping refuse in drainages or waterways.
Mr Kainuwa urged residents of riverine communities to relocate to higher and safer areas to avoid casualties resulting from eventual flooding.
