NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo dies after battle with brain cancer

NBA commissioner Adam Silver, in a statement, expressed his deepest condolences to Dikembe’s wife and children.

Dikembe Mutombo, the NBA Hall of Famer celebrated for his defensive dominance and humanitarian work, passed away Monday at the age of 58 from brain cancer.

The announcement was made by the National Basketball Association (NBA), which also said he was surrounded by family.

A four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Mutombo’s legacy on the court was defined by his shot-blocking and signature finger-wag after rejecting opponents.

Over his 18-year career, he became one of the most feared defenders, making eight All-Star appearances and setting records that still resonate in NBA history.

But his contributions extended beyond the game.

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mutombo dedicated much of his life to improving healthcare and education in his homeland, where he built hospitals and schools.

His humanitarian efforts made him the NBA’s first Global Ambassador and his work impacted communities far beyond basketball.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver, in a statement, expressed his deepest condolences to Dikembe’s wife and children.
