NATO states reject Ukraine’s call for interception of Russian missiles
NATO member states were sceptical about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call to intercept Russian missiles over Ukraine from their territory.
Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said this on Wednesday.
“There is a lot of scepticism on this issue. No single country will make such decisions individually. I have not seen any supporters of this decision in NATO,’’ Kosiniak-Kamysz told the PAP news agency.
The minister added that Poland would make decisions based on its national interests.
Kiev has called on Western countries to shoot down missiles over Ukraine from their territory.
French media, citing Ukrainian officials, reported in late June that Kiev was pushing European allies to create a no-fly zone in western Ukraine by deploying air defence systems in Poland and Romania.
Western countries have stepped up their military and financial aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s military operation in 2022.
Moscow has warned against continued arms deliveries to Kiev, saying it would lead to further escalation of the conflict.
