Naija Super8: Sporting Lagos defeat Remo Stars to clinch inaugural title

Lagos-based club Sporting Lagos have won the inaugural edition of the Naija Super8, an off-season football competition established in the domestic leagues.
The team defeated Remo Stars in a penalty shootout in the final on Sunday.
Having defeated Remo Stars 2-1 in the group stage days ago, coupled with massive home support, Sporting Lagos had the bragging rights and were the favourites going into today’s all-South West final.
In front of the fully packed crowd at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, both sides played out a goalless draw in the South West derby – the scored line remained the same until the 52nd minute when Sporting Lagos took the lead through Emeka.
Four minutes later, Remo Stars failed to level the score when Dayo Ojo’s pass to Sikiru Alimi went wide off the post. Goalkeeper Bankole Kayode denied Sporting Lagos’ effort to double the lead.
There was a moment of controversy in the closing minutes of the match when Adams Olamilekan’s goal was surprisingly ruled out by the assistant referee for offside. In the third minute of added time, the youngster scored again to equalise for Remo Stars, forcing the game into penalty shootouts.
However, Sporting Lagos came out victorious in the shootouts, winning 4:2 to clinch the coveted silverware. The newly promoted Nigeria Premier League club also won the money prize of 25 million naira.
