‘My wife always looking unkempt, doesn’t clean house,’ divorce-seeking man tells court

Adeboye Omotayo, a public servant, has taken his wife, Ella, to a customary court in Jikwoyi, Abuja, accusing her of persistent poor hygiene.
Mr Omotayo, who resides within the court’s jurisdiction, filed for divorce, saying he could no longer tolerate his wife’s poor hygiene practices.
“The main problem that I have been having with my wife after marriage is that she doesn’t know how to tidy up the house.
“Whenever I come back from work to have my rest, I can’t because the whole house will be filthy and smelling.
“I tried coping with that, but now I can’t continue because she has refused to take care of herself, too; she is always looking unkempt,” he said.
According to the petitioner, he feels used by the respondent, who thinks she has achieved her aim by giving birth to children.
“She has no love, respect, and affection for me anymore,” he told the court.
Mr Omotayo told the court that “my wife gangs up with her family members to insult, curse, and threaten me.”
However, the wife denied the allegations of poor hygiene, countering her husband’s claims in court.
The presiding judge, Thelma Baba, advised the couple to explore an amicable settlement for the sake of their children.
Ms Baba adjourned the matter until January 28 for a report of settlement/hearing.
