Motorcyclist arraigned for stealing yams, plantain

A 27-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Benjamin Adenekan, was arraigned on Thursday in an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for allegedly stealing a generator, yams, plantain, and chicken worth N137,800.
The defendant, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge bordering on felony and stealing.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Ayodeji Omoyeigha told the court that the defendant and one other are still at large.
He said that on October 12 around 12.00 p.m. at Lareda Street, Erinje in Okitipupa, Okitipupa magisterial district, and committed a felony.
Mr Omoyeigha said that the defendant and others at large stole a diesel lister generator valued at N100,000 and three chickens valued at N27,000.
Others are two tubers of yam valued N2, 800 and two bunches of plantain valued N8, 000, belonging to John Olayeye.
He said that the offences were contrary and punishable under Sections 516 and 390 (9), Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
The Chief Magistrate, Patrick Ajele, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N150, 000 and a surety in like sum.
He added that the surety, who must reside within the court jurisdiction, must show and present evidence of two years tax payment made to the state government.
Mr Ajele adjourned the case until December 23, for further hearing.
