Morocco 2024: Super Falcons thrash Cape Verde 5-0; inch closer to WAFCON qualification
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are a step closer to securing qualification for the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after recording an empathetic 5-0 win over Cape Verde in the first leg of the final qualifying round at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Thursday.
The Falcons did not feel the absence of forward Asisat Oshoala, midfielder Jennifer Echegini and defender Michelle Alozie, who opted out of the doubleheader fixture due to various reasons and ran riot against the Cape Verdeans to put Nigeria in the pole position for qualification.
Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo grabbed a brace in the game, and Gift Monday scored a goal. By halftime, Super Falcons were already three goals clear courtesy of strikes from Kanu and Monday, while two more goals came in the second half thanks to Okoronkwo.
Cape Verde will host Nigeria in the second leg of the fixture on December 5. Super Falcons only need to avoid losing by more than a five-goal margin to book their place in the 2024 WAFCON finals, which will be held in Morocco for the second time.
Super Falcons have participated in every edition of the tournament and are nine-time winners.
