Mining society restates commitment to sustainable practices, national development

The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) says it remains committed to promoting sustainable mining practices for national development.
The president, Rose Ndong, stated this at a press briefing to commence the society’s 262nd council meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Friday.
Ms Ndong said the meeting would be preceded by a conference titled “Optimising Efficiency, Sustainability, and Resilience in Natural Resource Management and Infrastructure Development.”
She said the theme recognised current realities and the need to adopt innovative, efficient, and sustainable approaches in managing Nigeria’s natural resources.
“As a nation richly endowed with natural resources, Nigeria needs to build resilient infrastructure that could support long-term economic growth and environmental stability,” she said.
The president further said the society would contribute by playing its role of promoting sustainable mining practices in the country.
“This conference provides yet another platform to drive our society’s vision of promoting geoscience practices in the country,” she said.
Ms Ndong said that choosing Akwa Ibom for the conference would stimulate the local economy by boosting patronage of hotels, transportation, and other services.
“It will open up investment opportunities in the solid minerals, energy, and infrastructure sectors.
“This event will promote the state’s rich geo-tourism potential and natural endowments to a global audience,” she added.
Ms Ndong said the federal government had commenced the process of reviewing extant laws to give state governments control over mining activities.
