Man jailed three years for stealing phone during prayer in mosque

A magistrates’ court on Thursday sentenced a 25-year-old man, Ridwan Akintoye, to three months’ imprisonment for stealing a Techno phone from the mosque.
Mr Akintoye, who resides in Federal Housing Estate, Olomore, Abeokuta, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony and theft.
The magistrates, O.O Odumosun, convicted the defendant following his plea of guilty to the offence.
Ms Odumosu gave the convict the option to serve three weeks of community service at the Adigbe police station.
Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Olakunle Shonibar, told the court that Mr Akintoye committed the offence on March 26 at 6:00 a.m. at Ita Iyalode Central Mosque in Abeokuta.
He further explained that the convict came to the mosques pretending to be part of the early morning prayer congregation.
Mr Shonibar also said that while people were observing their prayers, he went to the female section, pretending to plug his phone into charge, and stole a Techno Spark phone already charging, worth N60,000, belonging to Okikiola Balogun.
The prosecutor told the court that the convict was a serial thief.
According to him, the offence contravenes sections 415, 388 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
