A 48-year-old man, Innocent Nwoke was on Wednesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing bags of sugar worth N13.114 million.

The police charged Nwoke, whose address was not given, with conspiracy and theft.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 13 in the Ikeja area of Lagos.

She alleged that the defendant conspired with others, still at large, to steal 166 bags of 50kg sugar valued at N13.114 million, property of GPC Energy and Logistics Company Ltd.

She added that the company is located at No. 4B, Regina Coker St., Ikeja, Lagos.

Ms Ilhayere said that the defendant was arrested following a police investigation.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene the provisions of Sections 287 and 411 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Lateef Owolabi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N600, 000 with two sureties in like sum who must be gainfully employed.

He added that one of the sureties must be a blood relative.

Mr Owolabi adjourned the case until April 30 for hearing.
