Man charged with stealing rice, beans, corn worth N1.7 million in Lagos

A 25-year-old man, Ismaila Lawal, who allegedly stole foodstuffs worth N1.7 million, on Thursday appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.
Mr Lawal is standing trial before the Magistrate, Funke Ogun, on a two-count charge of stealing and conduct likely to breach peace.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Insp Esther Adesulu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in February at PPL Bus Stop in Ojo.
Mr Adesulu alleged that the defendant stole foodstuffs belonging to the complainant, Mr Babangida Hazmat.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant stole foodstuffs, including rice worth N700,000, beans valued at N500,000, and corn worth N500,000.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant was arrested following a police investigation.
The alleged offences contravene Sections 168(d) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until July 25 for mention.
