Man, 25, arraigned over alleged defilement of minor in Ebonyi

A 25-year-old man, Effiulor Obumneme, on Tuesday appeared before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abakaliki for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl (name withheld).
Obumneme, whose residential address was not provided, is standing trial on a one-count charge of defilement.
The police prosecutor, ASP Lilian Aliede, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 7 at Igboji Market in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the minor.
She stated that the alleged offence contravened Section 34 (2) of Ebonyi State Child Rights Act and Related Matters Law of 2010.
Defence counsel, Sunday Eleke, urged the court to grant bail to the defendant on liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Linda Ogodo, rejected the bail application and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Abakaliki Federal Correctional Centre.
She further directed that the case file be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice and adjourned the matter until July 11.
