Mali cancels independence day celebration after attacks

Following a resurgence of attacks in the northern region, Mali’s ruling military government has cancelled plans to celebrate its Independence Day on September 22.
The council of ministers announced in a statement on Wednesday that the anniversary will be “celebrated in sobriety and in the spirit of national revival.”
Junta leader Assimi Goita commanded the administration to use the monies set aside for this year’s celebrations to aid those hurt in recent violent attacks.
The council also considered the prospect of calling up reservists to defend against extremist assaults.
Despite the presence of Russian Wagner Group mercenaries, security is deteriorating in the north and centre of the country.
