Maid, driver caught on CCTV stealing employer’s $3,000, police say

A housekeeper, Janet Daniel, and a driver, Stephen Adams, who allegedly stole their employers’ $ 3,000 and valuables worth N2 million, were arraigned on Wednesday before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court.
The defendants, Daniel, 25, and Adams, 29, both residents of Goni-gora, Kaduna, are on trial for conspiracy, robbery, and theft.
According to the prosecutor, Chidi Leo, the defendants committed the offences with two others still at large on October 20 in Barnawa, Kaduna.
Mr Leo said the defendants, who worked for the complainant, Blessing Christian, stole $3000, jewellery, bags and clothes worth N2 million.
He said the defendants entered the complainant’s bedroom while she was at work and stole the items without realising there was CCTV in the house.
The prosecutor said the duo were apprehended by the police and, during interrogation, they confessed to having committed the crime.
The offences contravened sections 58 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017. Section 217 stipulates five five-year jail term for offenders.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In his ruling, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the defendants bail of N500,000 each, with two responsible sureties each in like sum.
The magistrate said one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the defendants, and all sureties should be gainfully employed, with evidence of two years’ tax payments to the Kaduna government.
The magistrate adjourned the case until November 30 for the hearing.
