Mahsa Amini: Iran publicly executes citizen over anti-hijab protests

Iran has carried out its first public execution in connection with the ongoing anti-Islamic fundamentalism protests that erupted after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, tortured by the country’s morality police, The Guidance Patrol.
The official website of the Iranian judiciary identified the man as Mohsen Shekari. He was arrested on September 25 and tried for attacking a security officer with a knife and closing down a street in Tehran in continuous protest of Ms Amini’s death.
Mr Shekari, 23, was charged with creating terror and fear, depriving people of their freedom and security, and “waging war against God,” a phrase often used to describe the actions of citizens who actively exercise rights to freedom of expression and civil demonstration.
On November 20, he received his preliminary death sentence, carried out on Thursday morning, shortly after the country’s Supreme Court upheld it.
Human rights experts from the United Nations have urged Iran to stop executing prisoners in connection with the protests.
But Iranian authorities have refused, claiming that they must defend the country against plots by foreign powers, particularly the United States, which they accuse of being responsible for the unrest.
The UN Human Rights Council voted last month to commission a fact-finding team to probe Iran’s response to the protests, but Tehran refused to assist because the mission was “political.”
