Luigi Mangione, suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killing, charged with murder

Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, who was shot last week outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel.
Mr Mangione, who was apprehended on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, now faces additional charges for gun possession and forgery.
According to The New York Times, Police in Altoona detained Mr Mangione after a tip-off from a restaurant employee who recognised him from widely circulated police photos.
According to a complaint, Mr Mangione was sitting alone with a laptop and backpack, wearing a medical mask, when officers approached and asked him to lower his mask, they identified him immediately.
Upon being questioned, Mr Mangione initially provided a fake identification but later admitted his real name after being warned of potential charges for lying.
A search of his backpack revealed a firearm and silencer, both suspected to have been crafted with a 3D printer, along with a magazine containing six bullets and a loose hollow-point round.
Earlier on Monday, Mr Mangione was arraigned in Blair County, Pennsylvania, on five local charges, including carrying an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and falsely identifying himself.
Denied bail, he is expected to be transferred to a state correctional facility before being extradited to New York.
New York police confirmed that the fake ID found on him matched the one used by the suspected gunman to check into a Manhattan hostel days before the assassination.
According to the complaint, when officers asked if he had recently been to New York, Mr Mangione reportedly became visibly shaken and fell silent.
As the investigation unfolds, police continue to piece together the events leading up to Mr Thompson’s death.
