The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Victor Olaiya, has ordered an 18-hour restriction on vehicular movement during the September 21 local government (LG) elections.

In a press release on Friday, the command’s public relations officer, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the vehicular movement restriction will take effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day.

“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public that there will be restrictions on all vehicular movement. This will be imposed from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21 2024, in relation to the upcoming Local Government Elections,” said the police spokesperson.

Ms Adeyemi-Toun stated that although the measure was to ensure the security and smooth conduct of the electoral process, exceptions will be given to persons rendering essential services, accredited electoral officials, authorised media personnel, electoral observers and emergency responders.

“Armed security personnel on VIP protection/escort duties have been restricted from escorting their VIPs to the polling booths,” the spokesperson noted.

Urging residents to comply with the directive, she warned that individuals found violating the curfew will face the full wrath of the law.

The police commissioner, while calling for the cooperation of residents in maintaining peace and order during the civic exercise, reaffirmed his dedication to safeguarding the state and its citizens, as well as ensuring that the polls are fair and peaceful, said Ms Ejire-Adeyemi.
