Lawmaker seeks inclusion of constituency in Niger Delta amnesty programme
Nnamdi Ezechi, representing Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West and Ukwuani of Delta, has called for the inclusion of his constituency in the amnesty programme.
Mr Ezechi made the call in an interview in Abuja on Friday.
He said his constituency has one of the largest gas reserves and hosts many oil companies.
The lawmaker, who commended the youths for their peaceful disposition, said it was time to reward them by including them in the programme.
“My people deserve to be rewarded for being peaceful and law-abiding, in spite of the injustice meted out on them.
“Amnesty programme will help in bringing development and calming down the nerves of the youths, who have commendably remained patient,” he said.
Mr Ezechi condemned the wave of insecurity in the country and urged the government to ensure equitable distribution of resources to federating units.
The amnesty programme was created by then-President Umar Yar’dua on June 25, 2009, to address the challenges of militancy in the oil-producing areas.
