A member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Nanbol Daniel Listick (LP–Langtang North Central), has raised the alarm over the proliferation of unaccredited tertiary institutions in the state, particularly those offering health-related programmes.

He expressed concern that the existence of such institutions posed serious risks to public health and safety, calling for urgent regulatory action to verify their legitimacy and ensure compliance with minimum standards.

Mr Listick made the call during Thursday’s plenary in Jos through a notice of motion.

He said the motion stemmed from a recent joint oversight visit by the House Committees on Health and Education to several public training institutions, where lawmakers observed widespread non-compliance with accreditation standards.

He urged the House to pass a resolution mandating the state government to establish a Monitoring and Assessment Committee.

Mr Listick said the proposed committee would collaborate with relevant professional regulatory bodies to verify the legitimacy of the institutions, assess their operational capacity, and recommend the closure of those that fail to meet minimum standards.

The lawmaker expressed concern that many of the institutions were operating without proper accreditation, sufficient facilities, or qualified personnel.

He added that yet they continued to train students in critical disciplines such as nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and environmental health.

He warned that such practices were contributing to the production of unqualified graduates, promoting quackery, and posing serious risks to public health.

“Tertiary institutions are meant to instill not just knowledge and skills, but also professional ethics and leadership values. Unfortunately, the operations of many of these unaccredited institutions are fundamentally flawed,” Mr Listick said.
