Lagos police arrest two women over sale of six-day-old twins

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for allegedly conspiring to sell six-day-old twin babies.
In a press release on Friday, the command’s public relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspects were nabbed in the Berger area of the state after transporting the babies from Abia State for N150,000.
Mr Hundeyin said patrol officers from the Ojodu division made the arrest after they were alerted by a good Samaritan about the activities of the suspects.
The police spokesperson said, “The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls, approximately six-day-old, while travelling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.”
He said the investigation revealed, “The suspects were en route to deliver the babies to one nurse in Lagos State whom the mother of the babies promised to link them up with only after they had arrived Lagos.”
“Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime, stating that they were paid the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦150,000) for transportation of the babies to Lagos. The suspects added that the mother of the babies sold the babies because she could not give them proper care,” said Mr Hundeyin.
He added that the police transferred the case to the command’s gender unit, and the babies were taken to a motherless babies’ home.
Mr Hundeyin also stated that the suspects were arraigned on Thursday, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the other conspirators.
