Lagos govt to upgrade health technology college to autonomous institution

The Lagos State government says it has started upgrading the status of the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHT), Yaba, to an autonomous institution.
Tolani Sule, the state’s Commissioner for Tertiary Education, made this known at a two-day management retreat organised by LASCOHT on Friday in Lagos.
The retreat has the theme: “Creating a Global Standard Learning Culture for Lagos State College of Health Technology.”
The commissioner said the upgrading would expand and improve the institution’s learning environment, employment and salary structures.
“We noticed that the system of this college is still in line with those of the civil service, but it should be in line with other tertiary institutions in order to enjoy autonomy.
“You need your own employment, promotion and salary structures to boost the college’s personality.
“Plans are underway by the state government to undertake a total upgrading of academic and physical structures of the college to enhance its complementary role towards fostering excellent learning,” Mr Sule said.
He urged all academic and non-academic staff of the college to continue cooperating with its new leadership to boost its personality and operations as a health institution.
Banji Fajonyomi of the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management Science, Lagos State University (LASU), advised the institution’s management to concentrate more on students’ learning than grades.
Mr Fanjonyomi said students should be allowed to participate in lecture discussions, tackle problems and present findings.
“Creating a conducive research environment in the college by continuously inducing the teachers through workshops, projects, and seminars is very important,” he said.
Lukman Olumoh, the chairman of the Economic Planning and Budget Committee, Lagos State House of Assembly, urged the management to introduce technology to drive revenue allocation for the institution’s development.
Mr Olumoh said the management needed to ensure adequate implementation of internal control policies and procedures.
“Communication is key to ensure that people understand the programmes and projects of governance, particularly where the resources are scarce and inadequate,” he added.
