Lagos Fashion Week partners Prosper Africa to strengthen opportunities for African designers

Lagos Fashion Week has partnered with U.S. government initiative, Prosper Africa, for a “Bridging Markets” panel held on October 25.
The event, designed to strengthen opportunities for African designers to access the U.S. market, highlighted the growing interest in Africa’s fashion industry as a major player on the world stage.

The discussion brought together key fashion and trade experts, with British A. Robinson, Coordinator of Prosper Africa, stating, “We are proud to support Lagos Fashion Week.
This event is a crucial link between African fashion and the U.S. market, and we look forward to seeing increased access for African designers,” he said.
Chairman of Lagos Fashion Week, Tokunbo Akerele, shared this perspective, emphasising the expanding global reach of African fashion.
He stated, “The ‘Bridging Markets’ initiative provides designers with essential tools and networks to grow their businesses internationally. African fashion is distinct in its craftsmanship, storytelling, and commitment to sustainability.’’

U.S. Consul General Will Stevens added that the fashion industry, a multi-billion-dollar sector, offers vast economic opportunities.
He said, “This collaboration is another step in strengthening the artistic ties between Nigeria and the U.S. Fashion is now joining music, film, and sports as a growing area of exchange between our two countries.”
The panel offered insights into the complexities of entering the U.S. market, from securing retail partnerships to navigating international trade shows such as Coterie and Sourcing at Magic.
It also showcased successful partnerships, including Lagos Fashion Week’s four-year collaboration with luxury platform Moda Operandi, which has significantly boosted the visibility of African brands in the U.S.

With global consumers increasingly seeking ethical and sustainable fashion, Africa’s strong tradition of responsible production and cultural heritage positions it as a leader in the future of fashion.
This event marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a more inclusive, sustainable, and globally interconnected fashion industry, setting the stage for the continued rise of African designers on the world stage.
