Kwara govt. decries indiscriminate dumping of waste

The Kwara government has again decried the indiscriminate dumping of waste in waterways, drains and road medians, urging a new orientation among residents.
The Kwara Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Musa-Buge, made the plea on Friday in Ilorin at the inauguration of 70 roll-on waste bins and five Skip Eaters for proper waste disposal.
The commissioner stressed that achieving a sustainable, clean and healthy environment requires all hands on deck; therefore, he solicited the support of all residents.
“The populace should try to make judicious use of the equipment and waste management, saying evacuation and dumping should be done responsibly in order to have a sustainable, healthy and clean environment.
“We solicit your support and constant responsibility, to change the orientation of our people, so that they will desist from dumping waste on road medians, waterways, drainage or floods.
“Let us try and make use of the waste bins, rather than dumping waste indiscriminately, for the people of Kwara to have a healthy and clean environment,’’ the commissioner said.
Ms Musa-Buge said the state government collaborated with Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Land Scape (ACRESAL) to acquire the implements.
“Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq approved the procurement of the new trucks and roll-on bins through the ACRESAL project.
“Part of the component of the ACRESAL project is institutional strengthening, which they used in acquiring this equipment, which is also positively affecting other ministries like agriculture and water resources,’’ she said.
The commissioner also said the governor recently inaugurated and distributed inputs to farmers in the state and tractors for each local government area, which was part of the ACRESAL project.
She said the state government had embarked on the renovation of water works, which was part of the institutional strengthening of ACRESAL.
