Korean presidential poll turnout reaches 79.4%

The final turnout in South Korea’s snap presidential election reached 79.4 per cent, the highest for a presidential vote since 1997.

According to the Central Election Commission of Korea, approximately 35.24 million people participated in the election held on Tuesday.

The total number of eligible voters was about 44.39 million.

Early voting, which took place on May 29–30, accounted for 34.74 per cent of the electorate.

As of 20:00 local time (11:00 GMT), the total turnout, including early votes, stood at 79.4 per cent, amounting to more than 34.48 million voters.

This marks the highest voter turnout in 28 years, surpassing all presidential elections since 1997, when turnout reached 80.7 per cent.
