Katsina introduces single interstate road tax sticker to curb multiple taxation

The Katsina State Internal Revenue Service (KTIRS) has inaugurated a “single interstate road tax sticker and single haulage fee” to address the issue of multiple taxation from motorists on the highways.
The board’s executive chairman, Isyaku Mohammed, while unveiling the stickers on Wednesday in Katsina, said that the project was initiated by the Joint Tax Board (JTB).
He recalled that Governor Dikko Radda signed an executive order on a single interstate road tax sticker and a single haulage fee in December 2023.
“Today, we commenced the sale of the interstate road tax sticker and single haulage fee.
“It will reduce multiple taxes collected from motorists on the highways and generate revenue for the state government.
“People are complaining that when they load a vehicle with goods from the north to the southern parts of the country, they usually come across several road blocks where they will be forced to pay a high amount of money in the name of road taxes.
“JTB decided to come up with the interstate sticker to avoid that multiple taxation.
“Now, over 20 states of the federation have joined the system,” he said.
Mr Mohammed noted that a sticker costs N7, 500 per annum, out of which N4,000 would be going into the state’s IGR account.
He said that the purchase of the sticker goes with an application where the owner would provide his vehicle’s information.
“When he comes across the enforcement agents in any state of the federation, there is a number on the sticker they will insert into an application to ascertain its genuineness or otherwise,” he said
The chairman further said that the board would engage youths who would work with the security operatives for enforcement on some strategic roads.
He, therefore, charged the enforcement agents to be more civil while discharging their duties.
