Kano government raises alarm over poor waste disposal in hospitals

The Kano state government has raised concern over improper waste disposal in some hospitals in the state.
The commissioner for environment, Dahir Hashim, made the government’s position known during an inspection of Waziri Gidado Hospital, Murtala Muhammad Specialists Hospital, and theAbdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital on Friday in Kano.
Mr Hashim warned that the practice posed significant health risks to both patients and the public.
He said that issues such as unclean restrooms, poorly maintained surroundings, and improper waste disposal practices could lead to spread of infectious diseases.
The commissioner emphasised the need for urgent reforms in waste disposal systems within hospitals, stressing that effective waste management was essential to maintaining hygiene to prevent diseases.
“We visited hospitals to evaluate the quality of their environment, ensuring that patients seeking treatment are not exposed to additional diseases or infections,” Hashim said.
He criticised open burning of refuse and improper sorting of biomedical waste, describing the practices as unacceptable and called for immediate action.
“Hospitals must take responsibility for proper waste management to mitigate further risks,” he cautioned.
The commissioner, therefore, issued abatement notices to the facilities, warning that failure to comply could result in sanctions.
He said that maintaining cleanliness was essential for a healthier and cleaner Kano state.
