Kano assembly adopts bill to establish state electricity agency

The Kano State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, adopted the Kano State Electricity Bill 2026 to establish a state electricity agency and promote independent power supply.
The decision followed the consideration of the bill at the Committee of the Whole during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail-Falgore.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the sitting, the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, said that with the Assembly’s adoption of the recommittal bill, it would now be transmitted to the executive arm for assent.
He said that once assented to by Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf, the law would provide for the establishment of an electricity agency to be headed by a Managing Director and governed by a council whose members would serve a three-year term.
The majority leader added that the proposed agency would create an enabling environment for local and foreign investors to participate in electricity generation and distribution, thereby boosting economic development in the state.
Meanwhile, the House also adopted a motion of urgent public importance on the vandalisation of electricity infrastructure in Madobi Local Government Area.
The motion, sponsored by the member representing Madobi Constituency, Mukhtar Ishaq, expressed concern over the destruction of electrical cables and other power facilities by heavy downpours.
