Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organisation of survivors from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for its long-standing anti-nuclear activism.

This year’s Nobel announcement, delivered by the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Jørgen Watne Frydnes in Oslo on Friday, marked a poignant recognition of the hibakusha’s tireless activism against nuclear weapons.

The group, recognised for its powerful anti-nuclear advocacy, has used the personal experiences of its members to highlight the devastating consequences of nuclear warfare.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised their resilience and commitment to peace, underscoring the ongoing importance of nuclear disarmament as global tensions rise.

The group “help us to describe the indescribable, to think the unthinkable, and to somehow grasp the incomprehensible pain and suffering caused by nuclear weapons,” the chairman said.

Nihon Hidankyo’s campaign, which often speaks from personal trauma, has continued to stress the incomprehensible devastation of nuclear warfare, urging humanity to prevent future catastrophes.

Nihon Hidankyo’s grassroots movement, driven by survivors who faced the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, emphasizes storytelling as a key force in peace activism.

By sharing their personal experiences with younger generations and world leaders, they hope to prevent the unthinkable.

The prize not only honours the bravery of survivors but also sends a vital message in today’s volatile political climate.
