Jailed actor Harvey Weinstein hospitalised for emergency heart surgery

American actor Harvey Weinstein, who has been a prisoner at the Rikers Island jail complex in New York City since April 2024, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital for emergency heart surgery on Sunday.
The New York Times reports that Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, revealed that the 72-year-old actor had informed his jail consultant, Craig Rothfeld, on several occasions over the weekend that he wasn’t feeling well.
Aidala and Rothfeld had sent emails to officials at the prison and the hospital, stating, “This guy is going to die on your watch if you don’t do something,” before Weinstein was rushed to the hospital.
On Monday, the jail consultant provided an update on Weinstein’s health, revealing that the actor underwent surgery that morning and is in recovery. The consultant added that Weinstein has “a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment.”
Weinstein was convicted on sex-crime charges in New York in 2020 and has also been sentenced to 16 years in prison in a separate sex-crime case in Los Angeles.
Additionally, a Manhattan court has scheduled jury selection for November 12 in a new sexual assault case against him, and he is also set to appear in court later this September.
In 2018, Weinstein was charged in Manhattan with rape and criminal sexual act. He was found guilty, but the New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in a 4-to-3 decision in April.
