IWD: Economic empowerment of women remains my govt’s top priority, says Aiyedatiwa

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has pledged that the welfare and development of women will always be his government’s top priority.
Mr Aiyedatiwa also said the economic empowerment of women is also a key strategy in ensuring families flourish, communities grow, and society progresses.
The governor spoke on Saturday at an event celebrating the International Women’s Days at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome) in Akure.
Mr Aiyedatiwa also used the avenue to flag off the distribution of the grants to women.
“The economic empowerment of women is a top priority for this administration. We believe that when women are supported, families flourish, communities grow, and society progresses.
“That is why we are rolling out initiatives like this grant to provide women with the financial backing needed to expand their businesses and improve their economic status,” he said.
The governor also promised to ensure that women are actively involved in decision-making at all levels, stressing that empowering them is necessary for a thriving society.
Mr Aiyedatiwa appreciated women’s role in the political and socio-economic development of the state, acknowledging their contributions in the November 16, 2024, gubernatorial election.
He emphasised that achieving gender equality requires a collective effort from the government and society, urging individuals, institutions, and stakeholders to support initiatives that promote the rights and empowerment of women.
The governor, however, unveiled the Odatiwa Women Initiative’s Grant, a financial empowerment scheme designed to support 1,000 low-income women across the state.
Seun Osamaye, the special adviser to the governor on women affairs, described Mr Aiyedatiwa’s initiatives as major steps towards closing the gender gap in the state.
Mrs Osamaye, the event’s convener, highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to provide women with the necessary tools to succeed, particularly in entrepreneurship and leadership.
Former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Oladunni Odu, encouraged women to be bold, resilient, and proactive in pursuing leadership roles and economic independence.
