I’ve never assaulted my wife, farmer tells court

A farmer, Yusuf Kankomi, on Tuesday denied an allegation of assaulting his wife before a Shari’a court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, saying he never laid a finger on her.
The defendant also stated that he provided food for his wife, Ms Abdullahi, and even gave some of the food to the less-privileged as alms due to excess.
He added that he never disrespected his wife’s parents, as he believed they were also his parents.
He said, “Due to the respect I have for her parents, I can’t call her mother by her name.’’
Earlier, Ms Abdullahi filed a complaint against her husband over lack of food, assault and disrespect to her parents.
She prayed court to dissolve their marriage, saying she could no longer live with an abuser.
The judge, Anas Khalifa, asked the complainant if she had any witnesses, and she answered in affirmative.
He adjourned to October 29 for hearing.
