The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) has advised the Federal Government, civil society and community leaders to work together to prevent future occurrences of mob violence and promote peaceful coexistence.

The NIM President, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (retd), gave the advice on Saturday in Lagos, in reaction to the lynching of 16 persons in Uromi, Edo State.

The Federal Government has ordered an investigation and a manhunt for the perpetrators.

Mr Ayuba stressed the importance of tolerance and respect for fundamental human rights, including the right to live.

He said that the impact of such barbaric acts was far-reaching, both locally and globally, and might lead to a breakdown of law and order, displacement of communities and a decline in economic activity.

Mr Ayuba said that globally, such incidents could damage Nigeria’s reputation, deter investment, and undermine international relationships.

He urged the government to take immediate and decisive action to prevent future occurrences.

According to him, such acts of violence and lawlessness have no place in the society and only serve to undermine the rule of law and perpetuate a culture of fear and intimidation.

He said, “There is a need to further ensure that our law enforcement agencies are adequately equipped and trained to respond effectively to incidents of mob violence. As a nation, we must continue to promote and encourage engagement of stakeholders in dialogue and conflict resolution initiatives to prevent the escalation of disputes into violence.’’
