Imo CP arrests seven officers for extorting, harassing motorists

Seven operatives of the Imo State Police Command were on Tuesday arrested for alleged extortion, harassment, and other unprofessional conduct against innocent road users.
The command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, in a statement on Wednesday, said the officers were nabbed during a statewide inspection of police checkpoints by the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma.
Mr Okoye, in the statement, said the police commissioner, on, “June 17, 2025, embarked on an operational tour of police checkpoints across the state including those along the Owerri–Onitsha, Owerri – Port Harcourt, and Owerri–Umuahia highways.
“Following the inspection, seven personnel were identified and arrested for various infractions. Appropriate disciplinary measures have been initiated in line with established procedures, and further updates will be communicated in due course. The inspection followed reports and complaints from members of the public concerning alleged acts of extortion, harassment, and other forms of unprofessional conduct by some police personnel on field duties.’’
He assured that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the errant officers as the command intensified efforts to sanitise its operations by entrenching professionalism and discipline to gain public confidence.
During the tour,Mr Danjuma reminded officers at various duty posts, about the core values of modern policing, discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights, warning that officers found engaging in misconduct would face strict disciplinary action, including dismissal and possible prosecution.
Mr Danjuma also engaged some motorists and commuters, “urging them not to give money to any police officer on duty or surrender their mobile phones for unauthorised search.’’
He stated that such acts were unlawful, unethical, and would not be tolerated.
